Coursework: Preliminary exercise feedback and LR

1) Type up your teacher's feedback in full plus a summary of the comments you received from other students in the class.

There are some excellent elements to this – the shot perfectly captures the ‘bedroom hacker’ character you’ve created and the performance is strong. The sudden light works really well to introduce the character initially and the reaction is natural and effective.

The email shot is fine but on screen too long. I wonder if you could mix it up a bit by cutting in on a particular line or words – ‘criminal record’, ‘we will not be able to…’

The biggest issue here is that you are close to half the length of the coursework (1.21) and there are only really two shots I can credit (one of which being the email). The coding shot is not original so can’t be awarded marks – you’ll need to change this for the real production. The green colour grading and slightly closer shot afterwards works well but it’s fundamentally the same shot to the opening.

Your preliminary brief contained a lot that isn’t covered here: two characters, dialogue, range of shots and camera movement, editing to include match-on-action, shot-reverse-shot etc. For the real coursework missing key elements from the brief would hold you back in the lowest levels so it’s crucial that you return to the brief and ensure your 3-minute production meets every element.

2) Using a combination of your own reflection on the preliminary exercise and the feedback you were given, write three WWW bullet points and three EBI bullet points for your work.

Mise-en-scene

The actor is wearing clown makeup which could connote craziness and madness, which is reinforced by his bright coloured clothing. Bright colours have associations with the circus which links back to the actor's clown makeup. The actor is dancing in the middle of public as seen by the railings, stairs, the littered-street and the graffiti on the walls which also signals that the man has gone insane. Extract 1 The woman's home is dimly-lit to reinforce the film's theme of horror as darkness has connotations of the scary and unknown. The woman is wearing a casual outfit and is in her home.
