Bright colours have associations with the circus which links back to the actor's clown makeup. The actor is dancing in the middle of public as seen by the railings, stairs, the littered-street and the graffiti on the walls which also signals that the man has gone insane. Extract 1 The woman's home is dimly-lit to reinforce the film's theme of horror as darkness has connotations of the scary and unknown. The woman is wearing a casual outfit and is in her home. This signifies that scary things can happen to any ordinary person. There is a build-up of scary music to raise tension and keep the viewer on edge.
